The inaugural Paul Banks memorial shield will be displayed in the Sorell Cricket Clubrooms following a comprehensive victory in the Kookaburra Southern Cricket Association feature game against south east rivals Dodges Ferry at Shark Park recently. This fixture each year will represent as a tribute to the memory of south east sportsman Paul “Banger” Banks who passed away a couple of months back after a two year battle with brain cancer.
A fibre-glassier by trade, Paul was a life member and past president of the Sorell Eagles cricket club and played football locally for Sorell and Dodges Ferry, he worked at Ingham’s for 15 years. ‘Banger was a larger than life character’ long-time friend Adam Scolyer told the Sorell Times and deeply personal ‘he never spoke about his illness, not wanting to alarm any of his mates’ and his loss has been deeply felt around the whole community.
A fine display of team batting performance led by opening bat Todd Kelly (72) took the game away from the sharks in the morning session. Losing the toss and put into bat the Eagles posted 6/267 from its fifty overs.
