‘House of Longing’ helps restore the past

Dunalley artist Gay Hawkes staged a solo exhibition with the recent Ten Days on the Island festival. Entitled The House of Longing, Gay’s display of “lost memories” was a part of the Sites of Love and Neglect event, which saw exhibitions held in nine different sites around Tasmania. Interestingly housed in two neighbouring locations, the Old Dunalley Cannery and the Dunalley Hall, The House of Longing evolved from Gay’s desire to create eight items of furniture – one each for her children and grandchildren – as she had lost all that she had previously made in the bushfire of 2013.
