Mather up to the Challenge

Launceston’s Ben Mather has taken out this year’s Freycinet Challenge to bring the title of Australian Multisport Champion back to the state after six years of Mainland dominance.

Mather, who has competed before in the teams section of the race beat his closet rival Alex Hunt of Hobart by just under 15 minutes after two days of gruelling disciplines in Kayaking, Road and Mountain Bike and Running, with Mark Padgett third some 23 minutes behind the winner.

In the Women’s section, visiting Russian athlete Maria Playschechko, based in Melbourne, easily accounted for last year’s women’s victor Meghan Johnston by 22 minutes.
